knitting: a guide to self-discovery
For generations knitters have gathered, occupying their hands with their craft to create beauty, provide warmth for their people and to inherit wisdom from those around them. Every knitter, no matter what is going on in their lives—joy or despair—will channel that energy into their handiwork. Taking responsibility for the incorrect stitches they make and being confident to correct their work as well, teaches them how to deal with life problems in similar ways. Like meditation, knitting can guide you to personal growth through its craft. Its repetitive motion and required need for focus, alleviate symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress.
Crystal Salkeld, owner of Purl & Hank, understands this intimately. She created her business to motivate others to overcome self limiting beliefs through the art of knitting and making. Knitting came into her life about 6 years ago in the midst of her “Great Depression”. To overcome this, she tried yoga and some meditation but it never stuck.
She enrolled in knitting classes at her local yarn store, unaware of the profound changes that this simple course would bring to her life. By letting meditation guide her knitting, it taught her to challenge her expectations both in knitting and in life.
Purl & Hank provides quality handmade leather accessories and tools for a creative journey into mindful knitting. They exist to inspire, create, educate and to cultivate a meaningful community for knitters and makers alike.
