a story so sweet it tells itself
In 2014, Aja (pronounced “Asia”) Horsley was working as an urban agriculture researcher, leading sustainable rooftop beekeeping projects for culinary honey. Her research left her with the impression that the modern honey industry was facing some pretty severe challenges: adulterated honey, local beekeepers struggling to survive, and the ongoing decline of bee populations.
This was her moment of inspiration. She set out and created Drizzle, a raw honey, bee-friendly, 100% Canadian company.
Drizzle started as the product of another "backyard beekeeper" in urban Calgary. Its honey came from backyards and small plots around the city that Aja harvested and nurtured herself. By 2016, the demand for Drizzle honey products was growing beyond Aja’s ability to keep up. A nice problem to have as an entrepreneur. But around the same time, Aja learned that she had developed a deadly allergy to bee stings.
So she was at a crossroads, and considered abandoning the business and returning to her old job. But then she remembered what inspired her to start the company. She knew that she could help support local farmers. She was confident she could help make responsible changes in the food industry and contribute to pollinator research. She believed her customers: there was demand for real, raw honey in all its beautiful colours and flavours. So with her EpiPen by her side, she continued to press forward. And we’re glad she did!
Today, Drizzle honey is sold across Canada (in select stores and online).
